M&A lending to US blue-chip firms on summer hiatus
Bank lending to high-quality US companies to fund acquisitions has slowed due to concern over government policies amid the summer doldrums, but is expected to pick up after the Labor Day holiday, bankers said. No bridge loans were recorded by Thomson Reuters LPC in July, for the first time in any month since March 2017, as a more cautious tone set in over the summer after several acquisitions fell apart and US trade wars escalated. Volume of about US$44bn in the third quarter so far has been vastly skewed toward refinancing rather than mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and is currently around 24% of the US$181bn seen in the full third quarter of 2017.

[$$] Judge Rejects Large Parts of FTC Suit Against DirecTV
A California federal judge on Thursday rejected large parts of a nearly $4 billion government lawsuit alleging satellite-TV giant DirecTV engaged in deceptive advertising. At issue was a 2015 lawsuit by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission that alleged DirecTV didn’t adequately disclose that its lower promotional prices lasted only for the first year of a two-year contract. The FTC also alleged the pay-TV service offered free months of premium channels without telling customers they needed to cancel those channels at the end of the promotional period to avoid monthly charges. U.S. District Judge Haywood Gilliam held a bench trial last year.
